Summer Student Research Internship

The 2024 Joslin Internship Program will offer a total of 12 funded positions

An Unparalleled Internship Experience

Please note: Joslin requires proof of COVID vaccination for all program participants, as well as adherence to health and safety guidelines. Most intern positions will require on-site participation, though hybrid-remote work may be possible with some positions.

The Joslin Summer Research Student Internship Program provides 8-12 weeks of practical exposure to diabetes-related biomedical research, ranging from clinically focused to basic science investigation. In addition to direct laboratory experience and interactions with Joslin investigators, students participate in didactic sessions related to diabetes pathophysiology and treatment. During the course of the program, participants present results from their research efforts to their student colleagues and Joslin research staff.

Funded Positions Available

In 2024, the Joslin Internship Program has two different arms of entry:

  1. Funded directly by Joslin and
  2. Funded by NIDDK Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes

Each of these branches has a separate application and separate eligibility. If eligible, one can apply to both.

Joslin direct funding: To apply for these positions, please complete the Joslin online application below.

  • 2 positions for current medical students, dental students, students in other health-professional graduate programs, and graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences
  • 4 positions for undergraduate students

NIDDK Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes

  • 6 positions at Joslin are available for medical students through this program. See the NIDDK Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes site for details and online application. We encourage interested students to apply via both mechanisms and to indicate Joslin as the desired internship site.
Application Information

1) Students are required to submit an online application by January 31, 2024 Applications will be reviewed by Joslin staff only after the application process has closed, i.e. after January 31. Notification of acceptance into the program will be completed by March 31, 2024.

2) We strongly encourage students who are interested in this program to review website descriptions of the research programs of individual Joslin Investigators. Applicants may indicate up to 3 research investigators of particular interest.

Research investigators will review applications and contact selected students to discuss research opportunities. If there are no openings in the laboratories initially identified by the applicant, the application may be circulated to additional investigators for consideration, if the student so chooses. Dates for internships are somewhat flexible but are generally 8-12 weeks in length.

3) Joslin internship students will receive a stipend for their period of stay. Undergraduate students will receive a stipend of $3,000.00 for their complete period of stay. Medical and/or graduate students will receive a stipend in an amount based on their period (number of days) of stay per the NIH student stipend level.

To be eligible for the stipend, students must be:

  • Citizens or permanent residents of the US
  • Enrolled and in good standing and must have completed at least one quarter in a program leading to:
    • a clinical doctorate or a masters or doctorate degree in physical or quantitative science, such as physics, mathematics, or engineering (for the training grant positions)
    • a medical, dental, PharmD, or other health professional degree
    • an undergraduate degree (BA, BS)

Individuals already holding a research doctorate or master’s degree, or a combined professional and research doctorate normally are not eligible for short-term training positions.

To be considered for these funded positions, students need to apply to the Joslin program (via this website). We strongly encourage medical students to also apply to the NIDDK program on the NIDDK Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes site where they should indicate Joslin as their internship site.

Students not accepted for or eligible for a funded position will be automatically considered for a volunteer position if so desired.
