Since joining the staff of the Beetham Eye Institute (BEI) in 1985, Dr. Sharuk has dedicated his professional career to providing comprehensive medical retinal care to a predominantly diabetic population, with emphasis on diabetic eye disease and laser photocoagulation surgery for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. He has also dedicated major efforts to clinical trials of diabetic retinopathy, seamlessly combining clinical care with leadership and participation in clinical research trials of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. Dr. Sharuk currently serves as the site Principal Investigator for the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net) clinical studies conducted at the BEI and he has served as a clinical investigator for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study and the major trials of the DRCR.net that have resulted in establishing new paradigms in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. In his professional career, Dr. Sharuk intertwines clinical, research and educational activities, providing evidence-based care to his patients and empowering his patients to assume responsibility in managing their disease through diligent patient education.
