Meme Workshop To Bring Joslin Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Together in Laughter
About the Meme Workshop
Joslin’s Young Adult Program and Behavioral Health Department will come together to host a creative, onsite workshop for Joslin patients with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in November. Titled “Laughter is the best medicine besides insulin,” patients ages 21-34 will come together to meet and create memes based on their experiences with T1D. Joslin social worker Sarah Gatti masterminded the event and in her experience these sessions end up in a lot of laughter!
The 90-minute workshop focuses on creative art, which leads into a conversation around coping with T1D and good mental health maintenance. Dr. Elena Toschi, the director of Joslin’s Young Adult Program, will be on hand to answer any medical questions that arise, meet patients, get an education in “meme culture” and join in the fun herself! No experience is necessary for this workshop—just bring your sense of humor!
Sarah Gatti and Dr. Toschi hope that “Laughter is the best medicine besides insulin” will provide a new light-hearted way for people with T1D to socialize, while giving them the space to chat individually and even share contact information if they want to stay in touch with each other. Space is limited for this first session so sign up soon! We are planning future sessions as well and will keep our patients informed.
