Dr. Maria Vamvini is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Staff Physician and Research Associate at the Joslin Diabetes Center, where she works in the Section of Integrative Physiology and Metabolism. She is triple board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and obesity medicine, and serves as Associate Program Director and Joslin Site Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program at BIDMC/Joslin. Dr. Vamvini has been funded by the NIH and multiple institutional grants and has published her research in leading journals including Cell Metabolism, Cell Reports, Diabetes Care and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Dr. Vamvini's research focuses on the intersection of obesity, diabetes, and exercise physiology, combining human translational studies with mechanistic and molecular approaches to understand metabolic health. She has led and contributed to studies examining how exercise training and diet remodel multiple tissues, including white adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and the brain, at the single-cell and multi-omic level. Her work has uncovered novel neurogenic responses within adipose depots, identified the role of mesenchymal stem cells in obesity- and exercise-induced adaptation, and defined key molecular targets that mediate the structural and metabolic benefits of physical activity.
She is also leading a multidisciplinary project examining weight regain in post-bariatric surgery patients, aiming to build a rich multimodal dataset linking metabolic, neural, and molecular signatures. Ultimately, her work seeks to translate mechanistic discoveries into actionable insights for the prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
