Dr. Maria Vamvini is a Staff Physician at Joslin Diabetes Center and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Vamvini earned her medical degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. Following her residency, she served as Chief Medical Resident and completed a one-year fellowship in medical education at the same institution. Subsequently, she completed her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the joint Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Joslin Diabetes Center fellowship program. Dr. Vamvini currently sees patients in the Adult Diabetes Clinic at Joslin and the Endocrinology Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She is triple board certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Obesity Medicine. Her primary research focus is to investigate how physical activity counteracts the detrimental effects of obesity and enhances overall health, both in mouse models of metabolic disease and in human subjects. She utilizes cutting-edge omics platforms, including single-cell transcriptomics, to analyze various tissues and elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects.

Research Interests

Dr. Vamvini’s research interests include the role of exercise in reversing the detrimental effects of metabolic disease.
