Important News from Joslin Diabetes Center

September 14, 2023

Our colleagues at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and its affiliated physician group, Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP), announced in September 2023 that they have reached an agreement with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to create a comprehensive collaboration spanning the full continuum of adult cancer care in the Longwood Medical Area. This agreement includes a proposal to build a new, dedicated adult cancer hospital – the region’s only freestanding hospital focused on oncology care.

This is exciting and important news for anyone whose life has been or will be affected by cancer. It also has implications for Joslin, as the location for the proposed oncology hospital is the current site of Joslin Diabetes Center. While this news may come as a surprise, Joslin has anticipated for some time the potential for a move to new space better suited to future clinical and research needs.

The transition for Joslin and the development of the new cancer collaboration and planned cancer hospital will take several years and careful planning. We have started a thoughtful process of identifying potential new research and clinical space, and we will share updates with our community throughout the project. We know how much the current Joslin building means to our research participants, donors, patients and their families, as well as our clinicians, researchers and staff.

While Joslin’s physical space will look different in the future, Joslin’s mission to improve the lives of people with diabetes by working to prevent, treat and research toward a cure for diabetes and its complications will never change. We are excited for what is ahead and confident we can move forward in a way that creates advantages for Joslin and those we serve and helps support this important new initiative in oncology care.
