Study Looks at Muscle Loss in GLP-1 Weight Loss Treatment
GLP-1RA medications — such as Trulicity, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Zepbound — have been shown to be effective in improving diabetes control and promoting weight loss through decreasing appetite. Both effects are important for improving health outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, it is important to understand that weight loss might not only come from fat mass (FM), but also from lean body mass (LBM), which is mostly muscle mass. Losing muscle mass may have negative effects on physical function and overall quality of life.
The purpose of this study is to look at how combining a high-protein diabetes-specific formula (HP-DSF), with strength exercises like lifting weights or using resistance bands can help in minimizing muscle mass loss in people with type 2 diabetes who are starting treatment on a GLP-1RA medication.
This study involves:
- Three onsite visits to Joslin, spaced out over six months and two phone call visits in between the onsite visits.
- You will be asked to regularly do some exercises at home.
- If assigned to do so, you will also consume a high protein drink twice a day, as a replacement for a meal and a snack.
Monetary compensation and parking validation will be provided.

You may be eligible if:
- You have Type 2 diabetes.
- You are age 18-75.
- You are about to start treatment with a GLP-1RA medication (e.g. Trulicity, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Zepbound)
