Observership Program for Healthcare Professionals

Joslin Diabetes Center has revolutionized the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and education of diabetes worldwide for more than a century. More than 300 scientists at Joslin are committed to pursuing innovative pathways of discovery to prevent, treat, and cure type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their complications. Through our affiliation with Harvard Medical School and our staff of thought leaders and medical experts with a vast range of research and clinical expertise, Joslin has emerged as the global leader in innovative research and pioneering approaches to diabetes education and clinical care.

Joslin has the expertise and experience to develop and produce high-quality educational programs on topics related to the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. The goal of Joslin programs are to deliver educational activities that are timely, evidence-based, and relevant to the target audience, while reflecting the most current expert thinking and research findings. Joslin Diabetes Center has become a nationally recognized leader in the development of evidence-based educational activities. The hallmark of Joslin educational activities is the translation of cutting-edge clinical and research insights into practical applications for the clinician and ultimately, into better health outcomes.

We offer a range of educational experiences to medical professionals that can be modified to the goals of the individual(s) or the requesting facility.

Program Goals:

Understand the care model and infrastructure of diabetes as a chronic disease and the management from primary to tertiary care. Understand the management of diabetes care and gain a comprehensive understanding of its various treatments. Observe and experience some of the cutting edge diabetes management tools. Interact with diabetes educators from all disciplines (nursing, nutrition, exercise physiology) and other health care providers per the JoslinCare model. Draw on extensive Joslin training to enhance the outcomes of your patients.


  • Describe common misunderstandings patients/providers have about diabetes.
  • Identify the key lab values and target lab values for patient care.
  • Discuss basic meal and exercise planning for type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe types, actions and side effects of diabetes medicines.
  • Review skills necessary for patients to acquire for self-care, i.e.; insulin, self- blood glucose monitoring (SBGM) foot care.
  • Create a personal action plan for improving your own diabetes teaching skills.
  • Identify a set of patient education resources.

Program Activities

Some specific program activities have been listed below as an example of what may be available to participants:

  • Observations with multi-disciplinary clinic, and group education programs
  • Attend conferences and grand rounds at the Joslin Diabetes Center and across the Longwood Medical Area on various topics related to endocrinology and diabetes;
  • Observe patient education classes at the Joslin Clinic; Please note that not all specialty observations may be able to be accommodated during the timeframe of the visit.

Based on the areas of interest expressed by the observer in the application form and essay, they may observe the following areas:

Included in cost:
• Clinical rotations in general diabetes clinic.
• The program offers observations of our educational programs, and the opportunity to shadow many one-on-one appointments with our RNs, RDs, EPs, and MDs/NPs. If you have specific interests, we can also focus your schedule on a specific area (i.e. pump/CGM, Pregnancy, etc.)

Who is eligible for this program?

  • National or International medical students, residents or fellows
  • National and international physicians and healthcare providers that are currently employed as a healthcare provider preferably in the area of endocrinology and diabetes.

Enrollment qualifications/prerequisites:

  • Possess excellent English language skills
  • Candidates need to submit the required documents:
    • Application form
    • An essay detailing goals and specific focus of training, including specific specialties and programs that they wish to observe and/or skills that they wish to learn.
    • Letter of recommendation
    • An up-to-date CV
    • Required health documents necessary for health clearance
  • All applicants will be interviewed via Skype or phone call

Calendar *Now only accepting applications for 2019*

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year, but will be reviewed for final decision by the following deadlines:
  • For periods starting between March and June   –   November 1
  • For periods starting between September and December   –   May 1


    Cost vary per experience and length of stay from 1-4 weeks, it ranges from $2,500.00 – 10,000.00
