George L. King, M.D., Director of Research at Joslin Diabetes Center, Recognized by Chinese Hospital
BOSTON — October 27, 2005 — George L. King, M.D., Research Director at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will be honored by the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees and Medical Staff in San Francisco as the recipient of the 32nd Annual Award for 2005. Every year, the Board of Trustees, Medical Staff and Continuing Medical Education of Chinese Hospital sponsor a full-day event in honor of an outstanding health care practitioner. The purposes of the award include enhancing medical services to the community, recognizing the achievement of health care providers, as well as encouraging other professionals in the same field to stride forward and make improvements in medical science and care for others.
Dr. King will receive this award in San Francisco on Friday, Oct. 28. As part of the award program, Dr. King will deliver a Continuing Medical Education accredited luncheon lecture entitled, “Designing New Treatments for Asian Americans and All Patients – From Cells to Bedside.” Dr. King will discuss: the epidemic of diabetes in the United States; how diabetes differs in Asian Americans from the general population; new treatments for lowering glucose levels and the risk of complications; and promising new treatments for diabetic vascular complications. Dr. King will give another short presentation and receive his award at a banquet later that evening.
“I feel privileged to be the recipient of this year’s annual award of the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees and Medical Staff,” says Dr. King. “This is indeed an honor since the Chinese Hospital is one of the oldest Asian American hospitals in North America.”
Dr. King, Head of the Section on Vascular Cell Biology at Joslin, received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his training at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle and at the National Institutes of Health. He has been at Joslin and Harvard Medical School since 1981. As Director of Joslin’s Research Division, Dr. King oversees over 300 investigators in 11 Research Sections focused on unraveling the biologic, biochemical and genetic processes that underlie the development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and related complications.
Dr. King directs Joslin’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) and is co-author of “Staying Healthy with Diabetes: A Guide for the Chinese American Community.” The AADI was established in 2000 by Dr. King and Joslin supporters who were concerned about the increasing incidence of diabetes among Asian Americans. In addition to a bi-lingual Asian Clinic, the AADI includes local and national educational presentations for health professionals and outreach programs for the public. One of the centerpieces of the AADI is an interactive Chinese-English diabetes Web site, http://aadi.joslin.harvard.edu/. The AADI site features content from Joslin’s award-winning Web site translated into traditional and simplified Chinese.
